Child & Adolescent Care
Our children deserve the best in life and little is more important than their education and health care. Whether it's routine care to maintain optimum health, or specialized treatment for severe medical illnesses, deciding who provides this care for your child remains the same. It should be nothing but the best. Mental health is of course no exception. Education, training, and clinical experience are important factors to consider when choosing a physician. In psychiatry however, much more must be considered as well. Due to the extremely personal and private nature of problems presenting to a psychiatrist, trust is of the utmost importance. However, choosing a Child & Adolescent psychiatrist that incorporates these special traits can be daunting. Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Jones prides themselves in providing the best in assessment and treatment with the time and compassion one would expect from their physician.
Using a biopsychosocial approach, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Jones incorporates biological, psychological, and social elements influencing you and your child. Each child & adolescent is seen as part of a familial and social network rather than solely as an individual without influence of or by his or her surroundings. Multiple factors play a role in the pathology of disease in all of us. By assessing all of these factors, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Jones will always formulate a treatment plan that incorporates all facets of psychotherapy, including cognitive and behavioral approaches to change, utilizing medications only after exhausting all other psychotherapeutic modalities. As a parent themselves, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Jones fully understand the anxiety of having a child on medication. However, medications can be very helpful for many conditions. Both Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Jones reserve the use of medication for those who are significantly impaired by their condition. Should medications be indicated and initiated, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Jones will take special care in monitoring for side effects and keeping patients and their families informed about all of the risks and benefits associated with their medications.
Dr. Jones has a multitude of clinical experience working in both inpatient and outpatient settings, which include specialties of forensic psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and emergency psychiatry. This includes areas of child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric services at both the Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital and the University of New Mexico Hospital System. Dr. Jones also has experience working at the VA Medical Center in both New Mexico and Virginia successfully treating mental illness in veterans.
Most recently, Dr. Jones has been providing psychiatric assessments, treatment, and education for the largest non-profit provider of comprehensive mental health services for children and their families in Delaware. He has enjoyed the unique challenges of his position and has been widely appreciated by his patients for his down to earth and approachable demeanor, as well as taking the time to explain clearly in plain language the reasons for his diagnoses and treatment recommendations. He has long missed the mountains, deserts, and people of the southwest, and is very glad to have the opportunity to return to start a private practice in the place he considers home.
Dr. Jones is a board certified psychiatrist in both General Adult Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Jones started his career by serving in the US Army as a Mandarin Chinese linguist. Following completion of his service, at the age of 30, Dr. Jones decided to pursue his undergraduate degree at the University of Delaware where he double majored in Interpersonal Communication and English Literature, as well as a double minor in Psychology and Legal Studies. During the course of his studies, he was granted invitation only memberships into Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key International Honor Societies for academic excellence. Dr. Jones graduated college in 2006 with the academic distinction of Magna Cum Laude.
Dr. Jones is trained in the treatment of all psychiatric disorders. Whether there is a condition that is completely disabling or you are someone just suffering mild stress from life's challenges, Dr. Jones can help.
